Starting Spring with Student Success!

On Tuesday April 5th, L2L hosted our third multi-school Student Leadership Conference at Bishop Reding Catholic Secondary School in Milton. With over 100 L2L tutors attending from 6 schools in the Halton Public and Halton Catholic School Boards, the conference was a terrific opportunity for our tutors to gain and build on their leadership skills through active application of creativity, teamwork and performing arts to help them in realizing their vision within and beyond high school. The students took on the challenge of designing small skits to demonstrate their journey of success through various aspects of their high school lives, and performing in front of their peers and teachers. It was a fabulously engaging experience with stellar performances!

The purpose of these conferences is to bring L2L tutors together to offer them activities and learning aimed to further develop their leadership skills not only as L2L tutors, but as students within their schools and as contributing members of society.

Our leadership program has garnered a lot of interest within the school community, attended by teachers, principals and school district superintendents with glowing reviews. The support provided by the Ontario Trillium Foundation allowed us to host the day and  we look forward to maintaining the momentum generated with this program.

Oh, What a Night... at the Movies!

L2L’s second annual signature fundraising event, ‘A Night at the Movies’ was a reel hit! With over 150 supporters in attendance, the February 27th evening at the TIFF Bell Lightbox was buzzing with excitement and we are happy to say the event was Sold Out!

The evening began with a private theatre screening of L2L’s very own short film L2L 2016: Student Voices (available for viewing here). Our film highlights what L2L does and who it serves - the students, and it offered our supporters the opportunity to hear about the benefits of the L2L program from the students’ perspective.

We were fortunate to have two of the stars from our film attend the evening in support of the fundraiser. The L2L student coordinators from Northern Secondary School spoke with enthusiasm and appreciation as they shared their experiences in being a part of our peer-tutoring program.

Guests also enjoyed an exclusive screening of the five 2016 Oscar nominees for Best Short Film: Live Action category along with an after-party, photo booth, raffle and a real Oscar statue for guests to admire and take pictures with.

Our FlipBook Photo Booth gave attendees a chance to get in front of the camera themselves with props and laughs to create their own 7-second animated flip book as a unique way to remember the night. A special thank you to Lily Ha of Pocketbook Cinema for the generous contribution to our event!

The night was an immense success in raising awareness for L2L and, on behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, teachers, principals, students, their families and their communities, we thank all of the attendees and supporters of the evening for helping children and youth excel in school and beyond. We look forward to seeing you at our 3rd annual signature fundraising event at TIFF in 2017!

Thinking Ahead

L2L’s dedicated board members and staff put their heads together one Saturday this past March for a strategic planning session aimed to secure the organization’s short and long term vision and strategy to grow the organization and continue its contribution and commitment to student success.

The day ended with the group feeling energized and enthusiastic about plans for the future. We look forward to providing further details as they unfold.

Trainer Team Building

L2L Trainers recently attended a refreshing team building and training session with Miguel Martinez, participating in some fun and creative exercises while sharing wonderful ideas they use to train their tutors using the various forms of Multiple Intelligences. Participants found the session to be a valuable opportunity to share best practices and lessons learned with their fellow trainers.

See You On The Greens!

On Saturday June 4th 2016, IDRF (International Development and Relief Foundation) will be hosting their annual Golf Tournament. IDRF has once again generously selected Licensed to Learn to be the charitable recipient of proceeds from their day of golfing. We are so appreciative of IDRF’s support, and what an organization to be supporting us! IDRF was recently selected for the second year by the Financial Post as One of 25 Best Canadian Charities of the year!

If you’re an avid golfer or just getting started, everyone is welcome. We hope to see you on the greens! Please visit here for more information on how to participate as a golfer, donor or sponsor.
